JOYA SCHOLARS Mentoring Program The JOYA SCHOLARS Mentoring Program provides junior high and high school students from families of low-income communities in Fullerton with dedicated mentors who will invest in their lives in order to inspire and prepare them for college success. Mentor Expectations: 1. Mentors will be strongly invested in building relationships with their mentee, other mentors, and the other students in the program. 2. Mentors will strive to inspire their mentee to attend and succeed in college. 3. Mentors will provide support, guidance, and accountability for their mentee to help them set goals for their academic future, follow through with these goals and strengthen their academic skills.
Mentor Support: 1. Mentors will receive training regarding the requirements of high school graduation, college acceptance and the college application process. 2. Mentors will receive training regarding program policies and expectations for students. 3. Mentors will receive peer support through quarterly debriefing opportunities with other mentors and individual staff support throughout the year.
4. Mentors will receive support and appreciation for their commitment to their mentee and the Mentoring Program.
Mentor Commitment: 1. Mentors will mentor one student throughout the school year (September through June). 2. Mentors will meet with their mentee at every JOYA Scholars event (4 events per month, consisting of 1 monthly workshop, 2 mentoring sessions, and 1 quarterly college field trip, mentor debrief meeting, or student-mentor-parent meeting). Weekly meetings will be held on Wednesday nights from 7-8 pm.
3. Mentors will aim to be available to their mentee outside of JOYA Scholars events when they have questions and/or need help applying and preparing for college.
4. Mentors will attend one mentor debrief meeting per quarter.
5. Mentors will attend one mentor training/orientation at the beginning of the school year.
6. Mentors will attend the end of the year JOYA Scholars Spring Benefit Dinner.
